We’ve been treated with a lot of rumors and spec leaks about the Taiwanese company’s flagship smartphone, and indeed the HTC One M9 is one of the most highly-anticipated handsets. During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (held between 2-5th of March), the company unveiled the ace up in their sleeve and once again touted its design and computational expertise.

So, it’s eventually here and, spoiler alert, there isn’t any major change design-wise. The M9 continues the traditional aluminum unibody design from its predecessors- the M8 and M7, offering tapered side edges which facilitate the gripping and the overall ergonomics of the phone. Finally, HTC decided to replace the power button from the top of the phone (on the M8) to the side on the M9. The phone is available in three dual-tone colors: Gold on Gold, Gold on Silver and Gunmetal Grey.

Under the hood, there are some pretty amazing specs: a mighty Snapdragon 810 processor paired with an Adreno 430 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (approximately 21GB available for the user), as well as a micro SD card slot. The rear camera is bumped to 20 MP with sapphire anti-scratch coating, while the UltraPixel (4MP) camera, a heritage from the previous model is now designated as a front shooter. The latter promises to serve as a terrific selfie-camera. HTC is now relying on Dolby’s sound prowess for their BoomSound speakers and, as past experience has shown they offer one of the best mobile device speakers. For powering this machine we have 2840mAh battery, which according to the manufacturer could last up to 21 hours talking time and 402 hours standby time. One spec that remained unchanged is the display- 5 inches, 1080p with excellent viewing angles and accurate colors. Some might argue that it could be better, it could be 2K, personally, I think that a 1080p screen suffices and still holds merits.

Software

The handset runs the latest iteration of HTC’s interface- Sense 7 on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop and offers some pretty neat options for customization. You’re afforded with the opportunity to choose from plenty of themes from the HTC Themes app and even build your own theme. This feature is pretty interesting- you simply pick up a picture and the phone will automatically extrapolate the themes’ colors from the chosen picture. Next up -- is the content-based homescreen widget, which is basically a set of apps that changes based on your location as well as your preferences. That being said, everything else on the interface appears to be fairly familiar-simplistic and straightforward.

The bottom line is that the HTC One M9 is the logical successor of the already successful high-end line of the company. It’s packed to the gills with the latest tech specs and it’ll inevitably vie for top billing. The official release of the device is expected to be in mid-March and eventually it’ll be available globally.
